Last week, we visited a staircase supplier in Foshan called Shangbu Staircase. The company specializes in custom staircases and has its own workshop and showroom.
During the visit, we were able to see how a staircase is made from raw steel materials into a finished staircase product. Inside the showroom, we also saw different staircase styles, materials, railing systems, and structural designs used for different types of residential projects.
From Raw Steel to Staircase Structures
As we entered the workshop, large steel beams and long rectangular steel sections were stacked across the floor. These heavy steel materials are mainly used for staircase support structures and staircase frames.
Nearby, one of the workers was cutting steel plates. From the way he handled the tools and measurements, it was clear that the fabrication work required a good amount of experience and manual skill.
Large steel beams and curved staircase frames were being welded directly inside the workshop. Some staircase structures were still in their raw unfinished form, while others had already started assembly before painting and installation.
What We Noticed in the Workshop
Curved staircase fabrication still relies heavily on manual work
One of the most noticeable structures inside the workshop was a large curved steel staircase that had already taken shape.
The factory staff explained that curved staircases are much harder to fabricate compared to standard straight staircases. Because every curve and angle is different, machines alone cannot fully automate the bending and shaping process. Many parts still need to be adjusted manually step by step.
For larger spiral or curved staircases, the production process alone can take around 10 to 15 days.
Although the staircase was still unfinished and remained in its raw black steel color, the structure already looked visually impressive inside the workshop.
Different staircase systems were built side by side
Inside the workshop, we saw floating staircases, steel support frames, stainless railing systems, and custom staircase structures all being produced at the same time.
Raw structures looked completely different from the final result
Some unfinished staircase frames inside the factory looked rough and industrial. But later in the showroom and completed projects, the same structures became much cleaner and more architectural after finishing, lighting, wood steps, and glass railings were added.
Staircase Samples in the Showroom
After the workshop visit, we moved upstairs into the showroom area.
Inside the showroom, we saw several different staircase styles. Some designs used clean straight staircase structures, while others featured curved floating staircase forms. Some railing systems used stainless steel, while others used curved glass railings. In some staircase designs, steel railings and glass panels were combined together on opposite sides.
There were also different color combinations, including white finishes, darker steel finishes, and wood staircase steps.
The showroom staff explained that most of these staircases are custom-made products. Because curved staircases and irregular staircase structures depend heavily on the customer’s actual building dimensions, each staircase usually needs to be produced based on specific drawings and site measurements.
Unlike standard factory products, these staircases normally cannot be pre-produced in advance. Production time is usually longer because every project is different.
Glass and floating staircase styles appeared frequently
Many of the staircase samples used open risers, glass side panels, and slim steel framing to create a lighter visual appearance.
This type of staircase design is commonly seen in newer villas, duplex apartments, and modern residential interiors.
Different Handrail and Railing Options
In one section of the showroom, the factory also displayed various handrail and railing accessories used for different staircase styles.
We saw different combinations of wood handrails, stainless steel railings, black metal systems, glass railing structures, and decorative railing posts. Some styles looked more modern and minimal, while others used more traditional or decorative details.
The staff explained that these railing systems can be customized based on the staircase design, interior style, and customer preference. Different materials, colors, surface finishes, and connection details can create very different visual effects once installed inside a house or villa.
Looking at the handrail samples side by side also made it easier to compare the differences in shape, craftsmanship, and finishing details.
Finished Staircase Projects
The completed staircase projects looked completely different from the workshop structures.
Once installed with lighting, stone finishes, wood steps, and glass railings, the staircases became much more architectural and interior-focused.
Some projects used integrated LED lighting under each step, while others emphasized thicker floating stair designs with heavier visual contrast.

Visiting the factory gave us a much clearer understanding of how custom staircases are actually produced.
From raw steel materials and welding work inside the workshop to completed staircase samples and finished residential projects, the entire process showed how much fabrication and customization is involved in this type of product.
The supplier appeared to be quite experienced in producing custom curved staircases and irregular staircase structures. The finished staircases looked visually clean and modern, while the materials and fabrication quality inside the workshop also looked solid and reliable.
